A collective stretch

THE world is evolving. It is therefore imperative that art should also flow with the current of this inevitable evolution.

This is the argument of a group of artists from the University of the Philippines Cebu College and University of San Carlos with the staging of their debut exposure, entitled “Unang Hunat,” held last Friday at Turtle’s Nest Book Cafe in Lahug, Cebu City.

The audience was basked in the playful impression of 67 contemporary pieces produced by the following artists: Jayson Bacunador, Ely Enerio, G.I. Pongase, Basti Penayes, Wyndelle Remonde, Carlos de la Torre, John Montecillio Jesus Codeniera, Ed Brian Lazaraga, Lean Luis Reboja, Gian Angelo Arcaya, Angelo Moralde, Borj Padron, Patrick Bucoy, Karby Beloy, RV Sanchez and Crezzo Paz.

The artists label their circle Koliktib-Koliktib, and it gathers a mix of fresh names who are mostly participants (some are awardees) of reputed art fares in the metro—an explanation credited for the display of modern outputs.

The two-week show, which is curated as the voice of the young artists, is positioned as a contribution to the promising art scene in Cebu.

“The industry is peppered with old and new players under the influence of tradition, experimentation and trend. Art should be constantly moving. The art landscape is now directed down south. It’s high time for exposure, especially for neophytes,” Remonde and de la Torre concurred.

Unang Hunat, which literally translated as “first stretch,” tells of the artists’ perspectives on social issues, personal experiences, psychological situations (and stretching) spoken through mixed media, be it oil, acrylic, textile paint, plaster and watercolor on canvas.
