How to brighten your eyes

TIRED eyes can be a problem for many women, especially if you’re a new mom, have long hours at work, or genetically have dark under-eye circles.

Dark under-eyes have been a challenge for me since I was in college. It seems no matter how much sleep I get, I always have these shadows beneath my eyes. For now, here’s what I can share with you to brighten up those peepers.

Skin care:

• As I always say, having a good skin care routine means that you can get away with less makeup. Incorporate eye cream into your routine for both day and night, after washing your face. For daytime, choose a lighter, non-greasy formula so that when it’s followed by makeup application, products won’t crease or slide around. You might want to check a gel formula, especially if you already have oily eyelids.

• When applying eye cream, use a small amount, tap on from corner to corner beneath each eye, then gently massage in with your ring finger until product has been absorbed into the skin. I do the same on my eyelid, especially at night. Be careful not to tug at the skin on your eye area.

• You can try an eye product that comes in a rollerball. The metal end will feel soothing.

• Try keeping eye products, in whatever packaging they come in, in the fridge. The cold boost will feel great and perk up your eyes.

• Carefully read product packaging if an eye cream is meant to target under-eye circles, fine lines, puffiness, etc. So far, aside from vitamin C, the ingredient Haloxyl is one of the best for helping capillaries around the eye.

• Stay hydrated, which is best for your skin and the rest of your body. And of course, get enough sleep. This varies from person to person, but most adults should get at least 7 hours a night.

Makeup:

• If you’re lucky, you can cover up bluish eye circles only with concealer. However, for some people like me whose shadows are darker, concealer isn’t enough. What really changed my eye makeup routine was adding corrector in an orange hue. It will cancel out the blue tones in the skin. Then, apply a medium to full coverage concealer, and set with fine loose powder to help products stay put.

• Groomed brows take the attention away from dark under-eyes. I used to leave the house with only concealer on, but ever since I started doing my brows, I can actually get away with no other makeup. Of course the under-eye problem is still there if I don’t cover them up, but doing my brows really helps make my entire eye area (and face) look better.

• The simplest thing you can do to make eyes look instantly brighter is curling the lashes. Follow with a lengthening or curling mascara to lift and open up the eyes.

• Apply a white eyeshadow or blend a white pencil on the inner corners of the eyes to make them look brighter.

• Sweep a shimmery eyeshadow in a shade that’s a little lighter than your natural skin tone. Opt for a matte or satin formula if lids already have fine lines, as shimmery eyeshadow will only call attention to them.

• To counter redness and make eyes look bigger, rim the lower waterline with a nude pencil since white may look too unnatural, especially for daytime.
