How to wear hair accessories (without looking ridiculous)

-A A +A

WHO says hair accessories are only for little girls? Putting a clip, band or some form of bling in your hair is the easiest, most commitment-free way to change up your hair, no scissors, dye, or iron required. People worry that wearing things in their hair might make them look childish, costume-y or “trying hard.” With some styling tips, hair accessories can look pretty and stylish. Get a few ideas here:

Flower Clips

Blooms clipped into the hair are so pretty for casual occasions or the red carpet, as worn by actress Zooey Deschanel. Twist hair into a casual bun, whether above your nape or off-center. Simply put on the flower clips above the bun.

You can add more clips to make a semi-circle across the top of the bun. Smaller clips without a lot of feathers and frills are the easiest to pull off, but don’t be afraid of wearing a larger or brighter bloom for occasions at the beach.

Head Wrap An increasingly popular hair accessory, the head wrap is a look that’s easier to pull off than a full-on turban. Many head wraps come ready-made that you just put on over the top of your head and go, but I’ve noticed that these garterized head wraps can be a challenge if you’re prone to poufy mushroom hair.

Try using a long-enough scarf. Fold it into a two-inch-thick band, lay it flat against the back of the head, and knot in front. Repeat going towards the back, then tuck in the loose ends. You can wear a head wrap right at your hairline, or a few inches back.

Flower Crown Does anything say “bohemian” more than flower crowns? These have become quite popular because of music festivals, to the point that they are easily available at the mall.

Go all out with larger blooms, or choose smaller flowers for a more subtle look. Try this with clothes in neutral or pastel colors to put the attention on the crown. Flower crowns look best with wavy, undone hair or with braids.

More tips for wearing hair accessories:

• If your hair is super straight and silky, hair accessories may slip off. Secure well with bobby pins that match your hair color, or spritz on a light misting of hair spray to create hold in your hair.

• You can always opt for an overall cutesy look, but if you don’t want to look too young, pair hair accessories with edgier or flirtier pieces.

• Hair accessories look more pulled together with some makeup. Try liquid liner and lashes and/or a statement lip in a shade of red, orange or maybe even something purple.

• Consider the size or color of your hair accessories when putting on jewelry. Of course, you can always go bold if that’s your style, but if you’re not sure if you’ve overdone it, take off one piece of jewelry before heading out the door.
