Culture of tourism

-A A +A

IN A SURVEY conducted years ago, and more recently, some selected respondents from the academe and the stakeholders revealed the need to re-tool our human resources to make tourism practices and services more effective and tourist-friendly.

The “culture of tourism” was then developed by this writer in coordination with leading schools and travel leaders and became one project of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tourism Committee (CCCI-TC) in the early 2000 onward, where Shirley Belleza initiated this project with the vendors of Talisay; then Department of Tourism (DOT 7) regional director Dawnie Roa, Cecille Saa and Jenny Franco had the cleanliness inspection in resorts; schools sponsored success stories of small scale entrepreneurs in People or “People Enhancing Opportunities Propelling Leadership Excellence” led by Stella Bernabe and Tess Chan; and most recently, the Turismo Sugbu, a co-project with the local government units of Cebu Province in which local tourist officers and community had an immersion program with eight universities in branding their municipalities and practicing the culture of tourism.

What is the culture of tourism? It is good manners and right conduct through the inculcation of the best traits of the Filipinos put into practice and services, in this case, in tourism.
