ONE thing that Cebu has seen a rapid rise of in number is coffee shops. There’s just something special about enjoying a cup of joe in a public café rather than making it at home. One café varies from another in a lot of ways especially the design. Some feature coffee-related accents while others are more keen on the architectural details. Whatever it may be, it is meant to make one’s coffee experience even more unique.

As for Crate Café, it’s hard to tell where its charm lies. It could be in the wooden slats that make up the tables, seats and coffee shop itself, its location along Veteran’s Drive in Lower Busay that offers stunning vistas whatever time of day, or the lamps and lights that hang from shade trees. Or maybe it’s the combination of all these and more.

Since Feb. 8, this cliffside café that’s a mere five-minute drive away from the city has been drawing customers, coffee and non-coffee drinkers alike. Crate believes in quality over quantity. That is why it serves only two sizes—eight ounces and twelve ounces. This way, one can really savor the flavor of the coffee. Crate uses 100 percent Arabica beans from the Northern part of the Philippines like Benguet, Kalinga and Mountain Province. These beans are semi-dry processed and medium dark roasted giving a smoky, bittersweet taste with a fruity undertone and a long finish. One can choose from hot, cold or blended coffee drinks. Here’s an insider tip—get the iced caramel latte or the banana coffee caramel on a particularly hot day.

There are non-coffee beverages available as well. The watermelon, green apple or raspberry Italian soda and summer smoothies can help to beat the sweltering heat these days. The flavor combinations of the smoothies—blueberry-pomegranate and strawberry-banana—are as healthy as they are refreshing.

Crate Café even has cakes and pastries to pair those drinks with. Croissants and Danish pastry are top favorites of customers but the cakes, macarons and others are just as great.

The café is open on Tuesdays to Fridays from 7 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays to Sundays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. straight. According to the owners, the best time to visit is between 4:30-5 p.m. as the setting sun paints a multi-hued sky.

At Crate Café, one gets served quality coffee every time.
