WHEN it comes to Italian food, the first few dishes that come to mind are pepperoni pizzas, garlic bread, chicken Parmesan, and the like. But what most people don’t know is that these dishes are actually American-Italian hybrid dishes, created by Italian immigrants who used ingredients available in the United States to do their cooking.
In Cebu, with the sheer number of pizza places serving up American-Italian dishes, finding a place to get one’s fill is absolutely no problem. But if one wants authentic American-Italian food, then there’s one restaurant that’s a notch above the rest.
Ä Veneto Pizzeria Ristorante, is a place that serves top-notch American-Italian food. Located on the lower ground floor of SM City Cebu, Ä Veneto serves up a delightful array of dishes that will definitely have any pizza and pasta aficionado happy. But to understand why Ä Veneto is a master of authentic American-Italian cuisine, one has to understand its history.
Ä Veneto started in 1994 in New Jersey in the U.S. as a family-owned restaurant owned by Timoteo Ignacia. The restaurant had to close down when the family decided to move back to the Philippines. Luckily, it wasn’t the end of Ä Veneto. The family brought the business home with them, the restaurant now having six branches in Manila.
Ä Veneto here in Cebu, being located inside a mall, makes for an excellent casual dining spot. With an easygoing atmosphere, the real treat comes when diners take a look at the menu and are treated to a smorgasbord of selections with the menu having a total of 93 dishes. What makes it even better is the mere fact that most, if not all, dishes on the menu are for sharing! Along with that, the variety of appetizers, pizzas, pastas, burgers, calzones, and more, insures diners that all dishes they order are made fresh right in the kitchen.
For pizza, a must try at Ä Veneto is the seafood special. Forego that image of a pizza with tiny bits of seafood as topping, as Ä Veneto’s seafood special pizza has whole shrimps and big chunks of squid embedded right into the cheesy goodness—a total treat for any seafood and pizza lover. If one wants two types of pizza, a request for getting half and half on one pizza is available upon request.
Have a hankering for pasta? The baked ziti with meatballs is a good bet, with the meatballs itself becoming a meal within a meal. But seafood once again takes center stage with Ä Veneto’s oil and garlic pasta with seafood white sauce stealing hearts and appetites left and right.
For dessert, one can order the sinfully delicious brownie chocolate meltdown, an item only available at Ä Veneto here in Cebu. The subtle sweetness and nuttiness of the dessert, along with the melt-in-your-mouth brownie, is a great way to end a good, hearty meal.
