Life-giving elements

ART has the malleability of its media. It can conform to the direction of the hand that leads it, so to say. There is sometimes an element of surprise.

When a person visually tries to tackle, portray and express personal concerns on the variety of elements that surround him, like the air he breathes and the water he takes, that person can only consolidate their complicated nature through abstracted forms.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

University of the Philippine Fine Arts professor Karl P. Roque Jr. recently held a solo exhibit at the Renaissance Gallery at SM Megamall. It was entitled “Elements.”

The show consisted of a collection of new abstractions that follow his environmental advocacy. The colors pulsated with life-giving energy and entertained the eyes while the message from each work feeded the mind.

Roque’s new works were presented in the non-objective vein. Formless, fluid and spontaneously made but his paintings in the final look represented the qualities inherent in both of the tangible and intangible likenesses of the earth’s elements.

In his universe, the landscapes and marinescapes were handled in such a way that at first glance they didn’t seem as from life. But the abstraction delivered an intimate look into nature. What more could be closer to life? Our earth still offers an endless possibility to an artist who considers Nature his beloved muse.
