Modern Renaissance: Man of God
Monday, November 8, 2010
THE Monsignor Virgilio Yap can be credited for the propagation of abstract art in Cebu because he taught and introduced it to a great number of people at a time when local art was focused on conservative and traditional, realistic painting.
His dedication to visual arts has made him the modern renaissance man of God. He taught in many colleges in Cebu. Yap, the archdiocese resident artist, designed churches like the Holy Family of Nazareth Church in La Paz, Bogo. As for being a man of letters, he once edited Bag-ong Lungsoranon, and wrote The Catholic Church in Cebu.

The Cebu Archdiocesan Museum (CAM) was his brainchild. Recognizing his talent, the church sent him to study the arts at the University of Sto. Tomas, and to three universities abroad. On his return to Cebu, the monsignor engaged the local artists with lectures. Years ago a painting competition was held to honor his life and work. Fifteen years after his death, he returned to CAM in spirit.
A comprehensive, retrospective exhibition was presented by the diocese to refresh us of his works and remind us of a great man.
