Beato Pedro not yet a saint: Palma-A A +A
Sunday, April 3, 2011
CEBU Archbishop Jose Palma downplayed text messages declaring that local martyr Blessed Pedro Calungsod has been recognized as a saint.
“False alarm,” Palma said during his homily at yesterday’s pontifical mass celebrating the feast of Beato Pedro.
“Ayaw sobra sa ka excited. Gastos pud na sa text (Don’t get too excited. It’s also a waste of load),” he said in jest.
“At the level of doctors and scientists, okay na sila. The theologians are reviewing the virtues (of Beato Pedro) and there is still the level of (review by) the cardinals. The last step, (is a review by) the Holy Father (Pope Benedict XVI),” he said.
Pedro Calungsod was a teenaged Cebuano mar-tyred in Guam in 1672 with a Spanish Jesuit priest, now Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores. The late Pope John Paul II beatified Calungsod on March 5, 2000.
Top of the list
During his ad limina visit to Rome last month with Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Palma said they visited the office of the Causes of Saints. They were told the cause for Beato Pedro’s sainthood was “number one” on the list, while the cause for Cebuano Archbishop Teofilo Camomot’s beatification is being reviewed, he said.
Palma said those who want to get the latest update on the cause of Beato Pedro can ask Cardinal Vidal, who headed the investigation committee, or Msgr. Ildebrando Ley-son, the vice postulator for the cause.
“Your devotion, how you show your love to Blessed Pedro Calungsod, will hasten his canonization process,” he said.
‘No marked date’
Palma said for Beato Pedro to be declared a saint, his virtues will be reviewed and one miracle will have to be attributed to him.
“There is no exact time frame (for the declaration). I think nobody would really tell us of a definite time as if it was a marked date,” he said.
The text message reads: “The Philippine ambassador to the Vatican, the Hon. Mercy Tuason, has communicated the tiding of great joy to us, Filipinos, and to the whole Catholic world that our very own Blessed Pedro Calungsod has been approved by the Holy See for canonization. Date of canonization is yet to be announced though. This is very timely, as CBCP has declared the present year as the Year of the Youth.”
