CEBU CITY (Updated 8:37 a.m.) -- State forecasters raised storm signal number 1 in 22 provinces after Tropical Depression Juaning changed direction, threatening Isabela-Aurora area.
Placed under Public Storm Signal 1 are Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Cagayan, Isabela, Ifugao, Mt. Province, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Quirino, Aurora, Quezon, Polillo Island, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Albay, and Camarines provinces.
In its 5 a.m. Tuesday bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) spotted the storm 130 kilometers northeast of Virac, Catanduanes.
"Juaning" packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center.
However, it has slowed down moving west northwest at 17 kilometers per hour.
Earlier, Pagasa said "Juaning" moved on its northwest direction threatening Isabela-Cagayan area.
By Wednesday morning the storm is expected to be 40 kilometers west northwest of Casiguran, Aurora; 180 kilometers northwest of Laoag City by Thursday morning; and 490 kilometers northwest of Basco, Batanes by Friday morning.
Residents in areas under public storm signal number 1 are advised to brace for possible floods and landslides.
The weather bureau said "Juaning" will continue to bring rains over central and southern Luzon and Visayas, becoming widespread over the rest of Southern Luzon and Northern Samar. (Sunnex)
