Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, in his opening address, said the church can help media provide information to keep the news from becoming “a meaningless collection of facts.”

He challenged media professionals to consider both ethics and social obligations in their work. The theme for this year’s awards rites is “Truth, Proclamation and Authenticity of Life in the Digital Age.”

Sun.Star Cebu reporter Justin K. Vestil won the News Writing plum; Luis Quibranza III won the Best in Feature Writing prize; and Managing Editor for Special Pages and Features Cherry Ann T. Lim won the Best Investigative Report prize.

The paper also received the awards for Best in Editorial Cartoon and Best in Editorial Writing from the archbishop and Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications Chairman Msgr. Trinidad Silva Jr.

Fr. Roy Cimagala won the sixth award under the English Newspaper category, for Best in Column Writing.

Michelle P. So, Superbalita editor-in-chief and Sun.Star Cebu executive editor for administrative operations, received two awards in the Cebuano Newspaper (Tabloid) category: Best in Editorial Writing and Best in Column Writing for Ernesto Lariosa.

The other winners in the Cebuano Newspaper category are Banat’s Ma. Eleanor Valeros for Best in Feature Writing; Rey Pasaporte for Best in Investigative Report and Ramesh Rosillo for Best in Editorial Cartooning.

This year, a TV show on the heritage treasures of Cebu was adjudged the Best TV Magazine Show.

“Kabilin”, produced by Sugbo TV, is the first Camma awardee for a program produced by a local government, the Province of Cebu. A group led by provincial consultant on heritage and museums, archeologist and professor Jojo Bersales, received the award.

Another government-supported organization, the Sinulog Foundation, won the prize for the Best Institutional Website.

Monsignor Silva said the media are a means for evangelization and the Camma awards recognize outstanding works of media “especially at this time when media are criticized.”

Media should play its part in educating people against human trafficking and cybersex, he added.

Dr. Teoddie Dumamag chaired Camma 2011. The jurors were members of the academe from the Cebu Normal University and the University of San Jose-Recoletos, along with six representatives from church organizations.

GMA News Cebu received a special citation for the show “Isyu Karon.”
