CEBU CITY (Updated 10 a.m.) – A cargo ship carrying 47,000 bags of cement has sunk off the coast of Antique province early Sunday morning.

Rosario Cabrera, Office of Civil Defense director in Western Visayas, told Sun.Star that all 18 crew have been rescued before the cargo vessel, Seaford 2, went down off the coast of San Jose, Antique around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Cabrera said the vessel started to tilt on its side around 3:40 a.m. prompting its crew to make distress calls to the nearest coast guard station.

The OCD chief said a possible oil spill might occur as Seaford 2 was carrying 7,000 liters of diesel but Cabrera said the coast guard has taken all precautions to contain any possible environmental impact.

The cause of the incident is still being investigated, Cabrera said. (Sunnex)
