THE Capitol awarded the cities of Carcar and Toledo the same cash prize they received during the Sinulog Festival last Jan. 15.

Gov. Gwen Garcia handed a check for P1.3 million to Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura and a check for P100,000 to Toledo City Mayor Aurelio Espinosa.

Prize haul

Carcar took home P1 million for being the grand champion in street dancing and another P300,000 for placing third in the Sinulog-based category.

It qualified for the competition after it was declared grand champion of the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan, which was held on Jan. 7.

The National Vocation High School of Toledo City placed fifth in the Sinulog free interpretation category and took home P100,000.

Both officials were grateful to the Province, with each vowing to do their best to capture the top slot of the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo in August.

The governor urged them to “raise the bar” when their contingents compete in the Capitol-sponsored Pasigarbo sa Sugbo in August.

Importance of culture

The Pasigarbo sa Sugbu, also dubbed the festival of festivals, is an annual competition among the towns’ festivals.

Garcia said preservation of cultural heritage is included in her 12-point agenda and one way to emphasize this is to relive all the towns’ festivals.

“Ang katawhan nga walay kultura sama sa katawhan nga walay espiritu (A people without culture is like a people without a soul),” she said.

Yesterday’s awarding ceremony was also attended by Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante, Carcar City Vice Mayor Patrick Barcenas and members of the Carcar City Council.
