‘Flash’ fields wardens in market

TO KEEP the city’s new public market clean, the Mandaue City Government has fielded eco-wardens to check that market vendors and consumers properly dispose of their garbage.
Placido “Flash” Jerusalem of the Mandaue City Solid Waste Management Team told reporters the eco-wardens are tasked to issue citation tickets to anyone, whether vendor or market patron, who fails to follow City Ordinance 10-2006-372, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance.

The city prohibits the “throwing, dumping, discharging, pouring out, unloading, spilling out of waste, refuse or garbage, whether solid or liquid in any vacant lot, yards, roads, streets, canals, rivers, creeks, underground drainage system and other public places.”
Under the ordinance, the disposal of waste that has not been segregated will be fined with P1,000. Other violations of the ordinance are fined P500.
Jerusalem added that fielding eco-wardens in the new public market will ensure that its materials recovery facility (MRF) will be fully used.
The eco-wardens will start issuing citation tickets to violators after a one-week information drive is conducted among the vendors, particularly in the wet section.
The new market, which opened earlier this month, is also equipped with a wastewater treatment facility. Other features include more than 200 parking spaces on the rooftop, five cold storage areas, air-conditioned food court, activity center and conference hall.
