DESPITE opposition from environmental groups, Rep. Gabriel Luis “Luigi” Quisumbing (Cebu, sixth district) expressed support for the ongoing reclamation project in Cordova town.
Quisumbing told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that the reclamation project in Sitio Camonilas, Barangay Poblacion was backed by studies and went through legal processes with concerned government agencies to secure permits.

He said the local government of Cordova town knows that majority of the town’s residents are dependent on the sea for livelihood so it will not do anything to jeopardize the marine ecosystem in the area.
Quisumbing reminded town officials, however, to maintain a balance between economic development and environmental protection.
Meanwhile, two groups of fishermen in Cordova dismissed allegations that they are opposing the ongoing reclamation project in their town.
Yolando Escavas, 72, president of the Camonilas Fisherfolks Association, said that they support the project of Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy.
Escavas said the project would create jobs and get rid of the foul smell that comes from the area.
Desy Tajanlangit of the Cordova Alliance of People’s Organization said the project will not affect the local fishing industry in the town as they also go to nearby islands to catch fish.
Cordova is reclaiming about 10 hectares of foreshore land to build a roll on, roll off (roro) port.
