Consultant wants abattoir off-limits to impounded dogs-A A +A

THE modern abattoir in Talisay City is reportedly used as a place to kill impounded dogs near the area where livestock are slaughtered.
This was revealed by former Talisay City councilor Aaron “Ronnie” Capala, the City Government’s consultant on slaughterhouse operations.
Capala is urging the City Government to close the city slaughterhouse in Barangay Mohon to impounded dogs to prevent infection with livestock being slaughtered there.
“Even people have difficulty entering the facility due to precautions we had placed there, how much more if stray dogs are allowed to be there?” Capala told reporters.
Capala said that last week, he was shocked to find caged dogs at the back of the abattoir’s main gate. The stray dogs were reportedly about to be incinerated.
In 2009, the practice of killing stray dogs inside the facility was stopped after city officials found that the city abattoir and the city dog pound share one condemnation pit.
Capala, who was city councilor that time, received complaints againat a foul odor from the abattoir’s septic tank filled with animal waste and the remains of slaughtered animals, including the killed dogs.
In response to the complaints, Capala recommended to the City Government to transfer the city dog pound to another government property, away from the city abattoir.
But despite these recommendations, the practice continued, Capala said.
Capala said he plans to request Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez not to allow impounded dogs in the facility.
Through the mayor’s intervention, the Talisay City agriculturist, who takes charge of the city dog pound, can bring the bodies of the dogs to the city’s sanitary landfill in Barangay Tapul to be buried there.
