THREE “torta” vendors were killed after the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a parked trailer truck yesterday past 1 a.m. in Barangay Binlod, Argao, Cebu.
PO2 Benjamin Herozaga of Argao Police Station identified the fatalities as Luisito Christopher Cambarijan, 32, Genito Amazona, 37, and Silvestre Gumera, 31.
The victims, who weren't wearing helmets, reportedly died from severe head injuries.
Herozaga told Sun.Star Cebu the victims home in Barangay Bulasa when their motorcycle crashed into the parked truck.
The collision jolted truck driver Henry Aque, who went to check and found the victims lying on the ground.
An incoming north-bound L300 van driven by Benito Fuentenegro swerved from the crash site but ran over Gumera's feet. The vehicle fell into the gutter. Fuentenegro was delivering newspapers at that time.
The victims, who were killed on the spot, came from Barangay Poblacion and had a drinking session. They reportedly sold “torta,” or a native cake leavened with tuba, for a living.
Aque, when interviewed by the police, said he parked the truck to replace a tire.
After fixing it, he went back to the vehicle and relaxed for a few minutes, until the accident occurred.
Police will investigate if the truck driver didn't put up warning signals that could have prevented the accident.
Both drivers were detained inside Argao Police Station and may face complaints of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide.
