Doc vows to continue giving medical help to poor townfolk

ALTHOUGH she has resigned as vice mayor of Compostela, Cebu to migrate to Canada, Dr. Mary Antoinette Dangoy said she can still serve the townfolk as a private citizen.
Dangoy, like her father former Compostela mayor Antonio, is a medical doctor.
“There are several people living in poverty who need help. I promised the people of Compostela that even though I will pursue my medical career abroad, I will come back every now and then to serve,” she said.
Dangoy said she gives free medical assistance to the poor but not to advance her political agenda.
Dangoy was elected vice mayor in 2010 but she, together with Mayor Joel Quiño and eight councilors, assumed office only last March because of an election protest that involved a re-count.
Vice Mayor Dangoy’s resignation became effective on Aug. 31.
Mary Antoinette said she will show her critics that her decision to help the poor in Compostela is not due to politics as she intends to give free medical aid whenever she comes back to the country to visit.
Clean
She said she can say with confidence that she is leaving the Municipal Government with a clean record, adding that she did not accept back wages, contrary to reports.
She considers the giving of financial assistance to poor Compostela residents who are hospitalized at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center among her accomplishments.
Dangoy chaired the Municipal Council committee on health, which facilitated the granting of financial assistance through the Municipal Health Office.
“We worked for the accreditation of our birthing center by Philhealth so mothers can be assisted even in normal delivery,” Dangoy said.
