‘Rename flyover after Remonde’

AN ORDINANCE that seeks to name the flyover in Barangay Mambaling after the late Cebuano broadcaster and Cabinet secretary Cerge Remonde has been filed before the Cebu City Council.
City Councilors Margarita Osmeña and Ronald Cuenco want the flyover named after Remonde to honor him.
The proposed legislation of Osmeña and Cuenco was filed after the Kapisanan ng Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) wrote the Council about the matter.
The KBP has expressed strong support for the renaming of the Mambaling flyover after Remonde.
“Mr. Remonde was an outstanding broadcaster and an outstanding leader in the broadcast industry as attested to by his unprecedented six-year term as chairman of the KBP, a position elected by the general membership of the association,” the KBP had said.
Warmth
Aside from this, the KBP described Remonde as a “warm human being who at every opportunity made everybody feel special and helped those who were in need.”
The plan to rename the flyover after Remonde was first brought up last June by Cuenco's father, former south district congressman Ronald Cuenco, who was the proponent of the P110-million flyover in Mambaling.
Remonde and the former congressman were broadcasters and became allies in government service. He was appointed as press secretary of former president Rep. Gloria Arroyo, while Cuenco was a congressman under the former president’s party.
Remonde died of cardiac arrest in January 2010.
During their regular session last year, the Council referred the proposed legislation to the committee on laws and ordinances chaired by Councilor Sisinio Andales for comments and recommendations.
