HEAVY rains triggered a second landslide in a mountain barangay in Talisay City last Wednesday night, causing more problems for residents and motorists in the area.
At around 3 p.m. last Wednesday, residents of Barangay Camp 4 in Talisay City were gripped with terror when a huge landslide hit Sitio Camp 5 in the barangay.
Camp 4 Barangay Captain Jun Cabingatan, in a text message yesterday, said the landslide occurred just about a few meters from where another landslide covered part of a road last Monday.
Cabingatan, along with barangay tanods, residents and personnel of QM Builders Construction Inc., were excavating the area surrounding the covered road when another landslide occurred following a heavy downpour last Wednesday.
The landslide reportedly blocked vehicles from Toledo City and Talisay City for more than 10 hours.
No one was hurt in both landslides, Cabingatan said.
Heavy rains
Talisay City Councilor Danny Caballero, who was visiting the site when the landslide occurred, said part of a cliff in Barangay Camp 4 have started to give way due to heavy rains this week.
Caballero talked to representatives of QM Builders to immediately clear the area of debris as soon as possible, so residents, especially students bound for the city, can safely move around in the area.
He also plans to talk with the Talisay City Council on putting up warning signs for motorists and residents.
Barangay Camp 4 Councilor Marvin Latorre, who also works for QM Builders, said they are working double time to remove the debris in the area.
Latorre said it may take a week up to a month before they could clear the debris.
The landslide last Monday forced 65 residents of Barangay Camp 4 to evacuate to safer
ground.
The Talisay-Toledo Wharf Access Road was blocked to traffic but clearing work is going on.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said Camp 4 and other mountain barangays in Talisay City are susceptible to landslides, based on a 2009 geohazard
survey.
