Negros Oriental town now smoke-free: mayor

THE town of Amlan in Negros Oriental is 100 percent smoke-free, according to its mayor Bentham dela Cruz.
During a press conference at the Department of Health (DOH) 7 Kamagong Hall in Cebu City yesterday, the mayor said their advocacy to stop smoking in the town has met with success.
He said they were able to implement the anti-smoking law with the help of DOH 7 Director Asuncion Andem.
He said the law has gained acceptance from residents and the business sector.
The Provincial Government of Negros Oriental supports Republic Act 3249, or the Sin Tax Bill, which aims to raise taxes on tobacco products to discourage smoking.
Negros Oriental plans to be the first smoke-free province in the country before Dec. 12.
Dumaguete City also will announce later this month that it will implement a total “no smoke” zone in the city. (June Paulette Eclipse, SWU Mass Comm intern)
