SOME 300 new members of the Liberal Party (LP) in Cebu were sworn in yesterday before lawyer Hilario Davide III and former senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr.
Among them was former Provincial Board (PB) member Victor Maambong.
In attendance were local LP members, such as PB Members Wilfredo Caminero and Peter John Calderon from the second district, PB Members Arleigh Sitoy and Thadeo Ouano from the sixth district, Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy, Bogo City Mayor Celestino Martinez Jr., Argao Mayor Edsel Galeos, Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado, Pinamungajan Mayor Geraldine Yapha, Barili Mayor Teresito Mariñas and Tuburan Mayor Aljun Diamante.
Gaining strength
There were joined by several town officials and supporters.
Davide, LP’s provincial head, said they are gaining strength in the second district, whose representative is Pablo Garcia, father of Gov. Gwen Garcia and Rep. Pablo John Garcia (Cebu, 3rd district).
As to the possibility of the governor running for the third congressional seat or as Pablo John’s runningmate, Davide said their plans and future lineup will not be affected.
“Wa ta mahadlok bisan kinsa ang atong kaatbang (We’re ready to face anyone),” he said.
Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale said she did not discount the possibility of facing Gwen in next year’s vice gubernatorial race.
She said she is prepared if that happens.
“LP has always gotten young people and good Filipinos to run for public office,” Magsaysay said in his speech.
Why not
The biggest delegations came from the southern towns of Santander and Boljoon, whose mayors—Marilyn Wenceslao and Teresita Celis, respectively—belong to the One Cebu Party of the Garcias.
The activity ended at noon.
Last Friday, Governor Gwen was in Dalaguete and Alcoy in the second district to distribute more than P5.6 million in cash assistance.
Three barangay captains, who are reportedly closely identified with PB Member Caminero, took their oath as One Cebu members.
Caminero said that if that’s what it takes to get help from the Province, then community leaders should go ahead and join One Cebu for the sake of their constituents.
Caminero said the financial assistance is really intended for the people.
