FIVE barangays in Mandaue City received cash for their solid waste management practices.
Barangay Canduman received P500,000 for being the top implementer of the solid waste management law among the city’s 27 barangays.
The other placers were Barangays Pagsabungan (P400,000), Labogon (P300,000), Ibabao-Estancia (P200,000) and Jagobiao (P100,000).
The giving of the award is part of the Sulong Mandaue: Search for Model Barangays in Waste Management and Eco-preneurship, a project of the Mandaue City Government, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi) and the Mandaue City Chamber of Commerce (MCCI).
Rafi Chief Operating Officer Dominic Chua said the project aims to strengthen the implementation of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Waste Management Act.
“We are supporting the vision of Mandaue City to be a cleaner and healthier city,” she said in a recent press conference.
The winners, which were announced during the Taxpayer’s Night last Sept. 6, were picked based on the assessment conducted by a team of evaluators last March and June.
The evaluators were from the MCCI, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, Department of Interior and Local Government-Mandaue City, the City Council’s Committee on Environment, Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environment Management Bureau 7.
The barangays were judged using a scorecard that measures the barangays’ performance in garbage segregation, collection, diversion, disposal and recycling.
The cash received by the winners is intended for projects in solid waste management.
