City vows to clear White Road this month

FOLLOWING complaints from the residents, the Cebu City Government vowed to clear the road leading to the sanitary landfill in Barangay Inayawan of garbage in a month.
Residents in White Road have since been complaining about the garbage littered on their roads and the foul smell from them.
In some portions, sacks of garbage occupy a lane, preventing vehicles and the residents to fully use the road, said Randy Navarro, manager of the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill.
The garbage littered at White Road is owned by some six material recovery facility (MRF) operators in the area, who makes a profit out of the recycled materials from the trash.
Lawyer Janesis Ponce, head of the City’s Solid Waste Management Board said they recently summoned the said MRF operators and compelled them to comply with Mayor Michael Rama’s directive to clean up the White Road.
“More than anybody else, it is they who are earning an income from the accumulation of trash for recycling, should be the first ones to take responsibility in the proper collection, storage and disposal of their residual waste,” he said.
These MRF operators are Erlinda Jaca, Lilia Llanto, Rowena Rodila, Warlito Ignacio, Edwin Ortiz and Joel Jopia.
During the meeting, Ponce said the operators signified their commitment to clear up the entire stretch of White Road.
The clearing operation will be assisted by the City’s Department of Public Services
(DPS).
With the help of the MRF operators, Ponce said the City is targeting to totally clear up and clean White Road by Oct. 17 or a month from now.
Once cleared, the City will be doing greening and tree planting activities in the said area.
“Hopefully, with this commitment, we may finally see a no non-sense clean up and beautification of White Road,” said Ponce.
