Pay for damages, firm asked

THE families in Sitio Sandayong, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City are demanding payment from the contractor of a bridge in their area for their belongings and properties that have been damaged due to a recent flash flood.
The families blamed Dakay Construction and Development Corp., which is undertaking the reconstruction of the Sandayong-Mohon Bridge, for the flood that hit them last Sept. 8.
“We know that calamities may happen anytime, but what happened was not a calamity.
What triggers the water to overflow is the long overdue construction of the bridge by Dakay Construction. It is in their contract that the project will be completed by July 5,” they said.
“The flood has caused material and emotional damage that we won’t forget for the rest of our lives,” they added.
Priority
The families believe the contractor is not giving the project the priority it deserves as the delay proves.
They said they can only see two to four construction workers on the estimated P12-million bridge, which replaces the dilapidated bridge.
The bridge, a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways, is 30 to 40 m. long, six meters wide and is supposed to connect Barangays Sapangdaku and Guadalupe.
It was earlier reported, though, that the contractor of the project had wanted to close the old bridge in the area for the immediate completion of the project, but the residents have expressed opposition to it.
Letter
The families already wrote the City Council and sought their help for the payment of Dakay Construction for their belongings, which have been damaged during the flood.
