A MAN detained in the Daanbantayan Police Station took his own life by allegedly drinking a bottle of muriatic acid last Thursday.
Gavino Siangko Jr., 55, died two hours later after being brought to the town’s hospital for severe abdominal pain.
PO3 Alfredo Mandal of the Daanbantayan Police Station told Sun.Star Cebu the drug suspect was about to undergo a medical check-up at the municipal rural health unit, which was required before he’d be sent to the district jail in the neighboring town of Medellin.
Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 61 Judge Antonio Marigomen had issued a commitment order for Siangko, who was arrested last Sept. 14 for allegedly selling illegal drugs during a buy-bust.
Siangko was reportedly waiting for his turn to be examined when he suddenly complained of extreme pain past 4 p.m.
“Abi nila ug nag-drama or nag-inartista. Pero nangluspad naman hinuon (They thought it was all an act. Then the suspect turned pale),” Mandal said.
The doctor advised SPO3 Herminio Marinduque and PO2 Ressan Moralde, who accompanied the inmates, to rush Siangko to the hospital. He died there at 6 p.m.
The town policemen later found a water bottle containing muriatic acid outside the police station.
Mandal said they had a bottle of muriatic acid because they recently transferred the inmates to a new detention cell and also conducted a general cleaning.
The eight other inmates didn’t see Siangko drink the bottle, but police believed he secretly did on his way to the health center.
Prior to the incident, the suspect told two other inmates that he would commit suicide if he was transferred to the district jail facility.
“Maypa og mamatay na lang kuno siya (He would rather die),” Mandal said, quoting the inmates.
Last Sept. 21, robbery suspect Cilfredo Pabroa, 28, hanged himself inside the Tudela Police Station when his live-in partner reportedly left him.
