Cordova mayor says lawyers allowed Salud to file COC even if he’s not a resident of town

Accompanied by supporters, boxing promoter Rex ‘Wakee’ Salud, his candidates for vice mayor and councilors filed their COCs at the Commission on Elections in Cordova last Thursday

Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy says court already ruled that Salud is not a bonafide resident of Cordova

CORDOVA Mayor Adelino Sitoy has threatened to file a disbarment case against the lawyers of boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud, who filed a certificate of candidacy (COC) for mayor even though the court ruled that he is not a bonafide resident of Cordova.

“I’m preparing to file a case to disbar them (Salud’s lawyers) for their ignorance of the law,” Sitoy told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Last Friday, Salud’s lawyers filed a motion asking the Regional Trial Court (RTC) to reconsider its earlier decision.

Earlier, Sitoy also threatened to ask the court to cite Salud in contempt if he filed a COC despite the court ruling.

Sun.Star Cebu’s calls to one of Salud’s lawyers, Fil Gumos, yesterday were not returned.

Accompanied by thousands of supporters, Salud, his candidates for vice mayor and councilors filed their COCs at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Cordova last Thursday.

Arvin Maghanoy, Cordova’s election officer, said they accepted Salud’s COC because they have not received any advice from the Comelec.

They forwarded the RTC decision to the Comelec’s law department last Tuesday.

One of Salud’s lawyers, Magnificos Cañete, said in earlier interview that Salud cannot be cited in contempt because there was no court order prohibiting him from filing a COC.

But Sitoy maintained he will have Salud cited in contempt.

“Nag-andam ta karon og prisohan para kang Wakee (We are now preparing a jail for Wakee),” Sitoy said in a phone interview.

Aside from Sitoy and Salud, two other candidates are vying for mayor of Cordova.

Vice Mayor Rodrigo Jumao-as is running for mayor under the One Cebu Party. Another mayoral aspirant is independent candidate Johnson Tan Jr.

A few weeks before the start of the filing of COCs, Sitoy left One Cebu and joined the Liberal Party (LP).

Lawyer Leighna Katrina Sitoy-Abarquez, daughter of Provincial Board Member Arleigh Sitoy, is running for vice mayor under LP.

PB Member Sitoy earlier announced that her daughter would run for Cordova mayor.

Mayor Sitoy’s daughter, Mary Therese Sitoy-Cho, filed her COC as an independent candidate for vice mayor, but Mayor Sitoy said she is only a “reserve” and will withdraw her candidacy in time.

Interviewed last Thursday, Salud said he decided to run for mayor because of the people’s clamor for change.

He said it was boxing champion Manny Pacquaio who urged him to register as voter of Cordova. He said Pacquaio plans to invest in the town.

Salud said he will exhaust all legal means to be able to run for Cordova mayor.

Cañete said they are confident their motion for reconsideration will be granted.

He said Salud has been a resident of Barangay Cogon, Cordova since June last year.

The evidence they presented to the court include the testimonies of 155 Cogon residents that Salud resides in the place.

Cañete said the barangay captain of Cogon also issued a certification that Salud is a resident of the barangay.
