THE environment department has ordered a “one-strike” policy against officials who fail to perform their duties under the government’s anti-illegal logging campaign.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 Executive Director Isabelo Montejo said this means DENR officials can be held liable for illegal logging activities in their jurisdiction.

He said DENR officials may be relieved for negligence.

President Benigno Aquino III, under Executive Order 23, ordered an all-out campaign against illegal logging and directed local governments and law enforcement agencies to work together in detecting and apprehending illegal loggers.

Failure

Montejo said a DENR official can be held liable if he or she fails to detect, report or apprehend the transport of illegally-harvested forest products.

He or she may also be held liable if illegal forest products are confiscated in his or her area of jurisdiction without his/her knowledge.

The memorandum issued by DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations Demetrio Ignacio Jr. states that all officials violating the “one-strike” policy will be relieved and charged after due process.
