CEBU CITY -- The body of a nautical student was found hanging inside his boarding house on P. Gullas St., Mac Center, Barangay Sto. Niño, Cebu City, Thursday morning.
Joavan Vincent Miana, 22, was supposed to graduate Thursday at 2 p.m., but his best friend and school mate Ian Belogolo said Miana’s name was not in the list of the university’s graduates, which may have depressed the victim.
He left four suicide notes for his parents, girlfriend and his friends.
His parents arrived from Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City on Thursday morning bringing along the victim’s toga, only to find out that their son was dead.
Silent type
His parents declined to comment to the media on Thursday.
His father Jose told investigators they did not know their son was having problems because he was the silent type.
Belogolo said Miana was feeling worried for the past few days because he was afraid he would not graduate.
Belogolo said he went to their school to check the graduation list and did not find Miana’s name.
When he went to Miana’s boarding house around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, he found his friend hanging from the ceiling with a nylon rope tied around his neck.
The homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office said that based on the letters the victim posted on the wall of his room, Miana committed suicide.
They believed he hanged himself around 3 a.m. to 4 a.m.
Other motives
Last Tuesday night, Miana reportedly had a drinking spree with his friends.
Belogolo said they kept asking Miana about his graduation, but he would just laugh.
Rey Cuyos, chief investigator of the homicide section, said they will have to check further the young man’s motive for taking his own life.
“The suicide note did not mention anything about him not graduating. It was just a goodbye letter, so we will also have to check that maybe the victim had other problems,” he said. (JBT/Sun.Star Cebu)
