THE Cebu Provincial Government and the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) plan to tap Smart Communications for the establishment of a three-digit emergency hotline.

Gov. Gwen Garcia said she hopes Smart can provide a communication network system using the VSMMC as the base.

She said they’re considering a number that can be texted without a load.

If an accident occurs, she said, a person can dial the three-digit hotline to contact the VSMMC. The VSMMC will call the nearest provincial or district hospital, which will send a rescue team to the scene.

VSMMC Director Dr. Gerardo Aquino said he expects the casualty number to drop if the plan pushes through since rescue will be immediate even if the accident takes place in an isolated area.

He said the responding hospital will also be better prepared to treat victims since it will already have information like how many there are and what kind of injuries they’ve sustained.
