THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) may suspend the safety certificate of mv Asia Philippines of the Trans Asia Shipping Lines, if it will not pass the re-inspection and re-audit after it suffered engine trouble at the Port of Iloilo the other night.

The suspension may be implemented today.

Because of the incident, the vessel failed to return to Cebu, thus, some of the passengers failed to join the Sinulog festival yesterday.

Marina 7 Director Nanette Villamor-Dinopol said mv Asia Philippines cannot leave port without the clearance of her agency.

A re-inspection and re-audit will be conducted by Marina 6 based in Iloilo. If the vessel fails, Administrator Nicasio Conti will issue the suspension of the safety certificate.

Trans Asia spokesman Julian Sy Jr. told Sun.Star Cebu that they will submit the vessel for re-inspection. He said he is confident that the vessel has been restored to good running condition because the slight trouble on the engine has been fixed.

He assured the public that they are responsible owners and are operating in accordance with the Marina Safety at Sea Inspection Service Manual.

Kenneth Sy, the president and general manager of Trans Asia Shipping, said it was only a minor problem but they decided not to sail back to Cebu because the safety of the passengers is their concern.

Trans Asia, a member of the Visayan Association of Ferryboat and Coastwise Service Operators is a fleet of 10 vessels. The other ships are mv Asia-Indonesia, mv Asia-Japan, mv Asia-China, mv Trans Asia, mv Trans Asia II, mv Trans Asia 3, mv Trans Asia 5 and the lone cargo vessel, mv Asia Pacific.

Under Section 10 and 18 of Republic Act 9295, Marina may suspend or modify a domestic ship operator’s license or accreditation, but only upon notice and hearing.

In 2011, all vessels of Trans Asia underwent re-inspection and re-audit by Marina and all of them passed and were declared seaworthy.
