A MAN was shot by a police officer after he tried to avoid a Comelec checkpoint in Barangay Kang-actol, Dumanjug, Cebu last Saturday night.
Leonel Gingoyon, 24, sustained a gunshot wound in his left leg.
PO2 Ramon Chinel of Dumanjug Police Station said Gingoyon made a U-turn with his motorcycle at 8 p.m. after he saw a checkpoint.
Immediately, PO1 Danny Camero blocked his way, but the suspect drew a .357 revolver.
Sensing danger, the police officer shot Gingoyon’s leg to immobilize him. The suspect, though wounded, managed to flee on his motorcycle.
Camero called for assistance from other policemen that led to a chase. The suspect was cornered by policemen, who confiscated his firearm with four live bullets.
Gingoyon was brought to the Barili District Hospital for treatment.
Chinel, when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu, said the suspect had no criminal records.
“Kasagaran man gyud sa taga-bukid kay magdala ug armas para protection (Most of those from the mountains bring arms for protection),” he said.
The Comelec checkpoints are held in preparation for the midterm polls on May 13, 2013.
