A 10-WHEELER dump truck fell from the Marcelo Fernan Bridge last night while on its way to Lapu-Lapu City.
The accident injured the unidentified driver and destroyed part of the bridge’s railings, but, fortunately, hit nothing else. The truck landed right side up on the road below.
An initial traffic investigation showed the accident happened past 7 p.m. while the Isuzu truck (ZDS-410) was on its way to Lapu-Lapu City.
PO2 Ruben Cerdeño of Mandaue City Police Office’s Traffic Section told Sun.Star Cebu they still have to identify the driver, who was brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for his injuries.
He said the truck loaded with limestone was going uphill when it suddenly began sliding back.
It went into the other lane before it returned to its lane, hit the steel railings and fell from the bridge.
Witnesses told police the driver tried to warn other motorists by honking his horn.
The vehicle landed right side up on a road near the foot of the bridge.
Cerdeño said some people who were below the bridge went to help the driver out. He said the truck slid back around 150 meters.
“Maayo na lang kay mingaw na atong panahona. Kuyaw daghan ang maangin (Good thing the bridge didn’t have much traffic. He could have injured many),” he said.
Cerdeño also said another truck also encountered problems while it was going up, at the same time as the one that fell.
He said the other truck also slid back, but the driver managed to stop it.
If the accounts of witnesses will be considered, Cerdeño said the accident could be attributed to a mechanical error.
