Rama may disband tourist cops-A A +A

IRKED by their alleged failure to attend the flag ceremony at Cebu City Hall last Monday, Mayor Michael Rama is contemplating dissolving the tourist police.
Rama was with Cebu City Police Office Chief Noli Romana and Station 3 Commander
Wildemar Tiu but said he could not see any members of the Community Police Action Center (Compact).
The mayor said he also wants to remove the Compact building from the Plaza Sugbo, which he considered an “eyesore” in the tourist compound where the Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica del Sto. Niño are located.
“If I could have it removed today, I will,” said Rama, adding that he will share his sentiment with Romana.
Senior Insp. Rosefelia Santolorin, who just assumed as head of Compact last July 10, said she has yet to make a courtesy call to the mayor.
Santolorin refused to comment on Rama’s plan to disband Compact, saying this is a matter that only her boss, Romana can answer.
But she said that if the mayor has not seen them during the flag ceremony, it is only because they are manning the vicinity of Plaza Sugbo.
“The role of the police during flag-raising is to man the perimeter area to secure the people, especially tourists,” said Santolorin.
Compact has 45 personnel, 23 of them are detailed at City Hall. Nine are under the Office of the City Mayor.
The tourist police man the Casa Gorordo, the Magellan’s Cross and Fort San Pedro.
Santolorin said that the tourist police are important because they ensure the safety of tourists.
But this does not mean that they will not help the locals because “we are not exclusive,” she said.
