Cebu City has a new treasurer-A A +A

BARELY a month after Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama got his chief of police, the Department of Finance (DOF) appointed his city treasurer.
City Accountant Diwa Cuevas is in-charge of office of the City Treasurer’s Office.
According to the order dated Aug. 8 and signed by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Cuevas’s designation is effective immediately and is good for six months.
“Hit the collection target and connect with the assessor for the revalidation of properties,” was Rama’s marching order to his new treasurer.
He also tasked City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete and Cuevas to visit the Bureau of Local Government Finance for the processing of documentation.
He admitted following up Cuevas’s appointment before the Office of the Vice President.
Cuevas formally replaced Emma Villarete whose term expired last July 18. But shortly after the expiration of her term, she was transferred to the treasury office of the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).
Rama does not think the transfer is a waste of Villarete’s skills as a treasurer, saying the CCMC is a large department involving millions in transactions.
“That department has long been needing an accountant and a treasurer,” said Rama.
Former Internal Audit Services Office chief Arlene Rentuza has also been transferred to the CCMC accounting office.
Villarete and Rentuza are two of six department heads who did not support Rama in the last elections.
“It’s a bright development towards what we wish to prepare,” said Rama, referring to the preparation of the second supplemental budget (SB 2) and the proposed 2014 annual budget.
Rama has yet to name Cuevas’ replacement, saying he needs time to discuss this with Poblete.
