TWO persons died in separate barangays after getting struck by lightning yesterday afternoon in Toledo City.
Marife Lavajo, 30, and Victoriano Macagay, 22, died after a flash of lightning struck them while they were outside their houses at 1:30 p.m. yesterday.
Lightning struck Lavajo while she was washing clothes in Sitio Bawod, Barangay Magdugo, while Macagay was in Barangay Biga, about a kilometer away.
In a radio DyLA interview, Barangay Magdugo Councilor Max Macapobre said that Lavajo’s two sons called out and asked their mother to get inside after it started raining.
And then they heard a clap of thunder, saw lightning strike.
When they checked outside, they saw Lavajo lying on the ground.
The barangay councilor said Lavajo’s neck had burn injuries and she probably died on the spot.
In Barangay Biga, Macagay, a security guard, was sitting outside his house on his day off. When rain began pouring, his family heard the thunder rumble.
When his wife, Evelyn, called out to him, Macagay did not answer.
She saw him lying on the ground.
Macagay, who suffered burns in different parts of his body, was rushed to the hospital but was already dead on arrival.
Toledo City social worker May Takando said she will check and submit her assessment to the city council.
She said the families will probably get some financial assistance. She said the families of those who died in previous accidents received P10,000.
It’s up to the council to decide.
