CATH (real name withheld) was asked by her mother to do a “show” in front of their computer for an American national named Jef-Jef last year.
The “show” meant standing naked then lying down with her legs apart, while her mother trained the web camera on her body, said the 11-year-old girl in her affidavit.
“I don’t like to be shown in front of the computer,” she said.
Her mother, Jane, and father, John, (not their real names) were arrested by the police in Barangay Ibabao, Cordova last week. They will face trial for human trafficking.
Cath said her mother also did “shows” for foreigners. The father knew about their online pornography business.
The girl did not go beyond fifth grade because she had to look after her youngest sister.
Under the Family Code of the Philippines, parents and other persons exercising parental authority “shall be civilly liable for the injuries and damages caused by the acts or omissions” of their children living with them.
“The family, being the foundation of the nation, is a basic social institution which public policy cherishes and protects,” the law reads.
Before Cath and her sisters were rescued by the police, she said Jane used to chat with an American friend at the Internet cafe owned by a certain Joey.
Jane later bought a desktop computer on June 1, 2012 at P6,000, on installment.
Two days later, she bought a broadband stick for Internet access.
Cath said her mother had a chat with another American friend six days later inside their house.
Sometime this year, she said Jane made her do a “show” in front of the computer.
Jane took all of her daughter’s clothes while chatting with a certain Ian, an American national.
On Cath’s birthday last Feb. 18, Jane chatted with Ian and Peter, also a US citizen. The two foreigners allegedly sent money for the girl’s birthday celebration.
“Peter asked my mother that he would like to see what she bought for my birthday. My mother showed (through) the webcam the pancit and humba she prepared,” said Cath.
She said: “Ian, on the other hand, asked my mother for me to do a ‘show,’ but I said no. My mother told Ian (that) I refused and he said ‘Ok’.”
There were also three occasions, Cath said, that she woke up naked, although she was clothed when she went to bed.
She asked her mother if she captured her on video, but Jane denied doing so.
“I also remembered one instance when both I and (my sister) woke up naked despite the fact that we were clothed when we slept,” said Cath.
Article 220 of the Family Code requires parents to provide their children moral and spiritual guidance, as well as wholesome educational materials, among others.
