POLICE arrested a town councilor of Carmen, Cebu who was accused of chasing his former driver with a bayonet outside the police station last Wednesday afternoon.
This is the second time that Councilor James Camara, 45, got arrested. His first was on Aug. 27, when he was seen carrying an unlicensed firearm at a checkpoint.
Chief Insp. Alvin Balio, the town police chief, said the councilor had just gotten out of a council session at 4:30 p.m. when he allegedly chased and threatened Domy Ruiz, 34, with a bayonet.
Ruiz told the police that Camara got irked at him during their conversation and picked up a bayonet inside his parked vehicle at the back of the municipal hall.
This prompted Ruiz to run and report the incident to police, which is near the municipal hall.
SPO3 Renerio Masocol saw Camara holding the bayonet outside the police station and
confiscated the weapon.
Camara had to be examined at the Danao Provincial Hospital before he can be brought to the police detention cell because his blood pressure reportedly went up.
But yesterday, the councilor had to be admitted to a private hospital in Cebu City. A police officer was assigned to guard him.
Balio said a complaint of grave threats was filed against Camara yesterday before the Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) in Danao City.
However, Camara, when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu, said Ruiz twisted the story.
The councilor said Ruiz got angry that he admonished the latter and his companions, who were drinking inside the municipal session hall.
Camara said he saw Ruiz’s group shortly before the council session resumed at 3 p.m. He then reported what he saw to the vice mayor.
After the session, Camara went to his vehicle where Ruiz was waiting for him and allegedly pulled out a bayonet and attempted to stab him.
The councilor said he was able to take the weapon from Ruiz and proceeded to the police station to report the incident.
“Naunsa nga gibali man hinuon (He has the story the other way around),” he said.
Camara said Ruiz used to be his driver until he fired the latter for misbehavior. He said he is coordinating with his lawyer to study appropriate charges to be filed against Ruiz.
