‘Help keep Pinoys’ hope up’-A A +A

WITH the controversies the country is facing, journalists should continue to focus on their role in recovering what the Philippines has lost as a nation.
Fr. Ramon Echica, who celebrated the mass in yesterday’s opening of the 19th Cebu Press Freedom Week, told media practitioners how important this responsibility is.
“Because of the controversies affecting the country, people have lost hope for the government. They have become cynical while some have lost their sense of justice,” Echica said.
Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, for his part, urged media workers to use press freedom well.
“Make it a network for the Lord to reach the people. Do it through your printed words and your voice,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.
Vidal gave the advice after leading a concelebrated mass yesterday at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.
“I pray especially for the press people because I know you have a difficult and dangerous job,” the prelate added.
The mass followed a parade from Fuente Osmeña to the Blessed Pope John XXIII Seminary in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City. It was attended by hundreds of print and broadcast media workers.
During the mass, Echica, dean of studies at the Seminario Mayor de San Carlos, reminded Cebu journalists and media workers that the public is at a stage where they have lost hope in the country following controversies like the pork barrel scam and the Zamboanga City siege.
“If we have lost hope as a nation, then we are truly in dire straits,” he added.
The mass was followed by presentations from the three newspapers and raffles.
Sun.Star Cebu was crowned champion in the Lip Synch and Dance Contest, with Cebu Daily News (CDN) and The Freeman named first and second runners-up, respectively.
Sun.Star Cebu also earned the Star of the Parade award, while CDN was also awarded as the earliest and biggest contingent during the opening ceremonies.
Last Saturday, Sun.Star Cebu’s Luis Quibranza III and The Freeman’s Jessa Chrisna Marie Agua were crowned Mr. & Ms. Press Freedom 2013.
