MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes urged taxpayers to help the City become a premier business destination during the awarding of the City’s leading taxpayers on Thursday night.
Cortes and members of the City Council handed plaques of recognition to the top taxpayers at the Oakridge Pavilion in Barangay Banilad.
The Coca-Cola Bottlers topped the corporate realty taxpayers while the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) topped the corporate business taxpayers.
Business tycoon Erramon Aboitiz topped the individual realty taxpayers. Vic Enterprises topped the business taxpayers under the sole proprietorship category.
The City divided the taxpayers into four categories: individual realty taxpayers, corporate realty taxpayers, business taxpayers (sole proprietorship), and corporate business taxpayers.
The City also gave special recognition to institutions that supported education. The awardees are the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., the Security Bank Foundation Inc., Veco, Mandaue Foam and the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
“In order to achieve our vision for Mandaue, it is not enough to pay our taxes and sit in the sidelines to wait and see. We must change this mindset and directly work with government,” Mayor Cortes told the taxpayers in his welcome address.
“I know it’s not easy to continue to honestly pay taxes in the face of the issues that plague our nation today. However, your continued faith in Mandaue City is proof that you still believe in the integrity of your local leaders,” he said.
In an interview with reporters, Cortes said more businesses will soon open in Mandaue as the City starts a coastal development project called Global City.
He said that businessman Norberto Quisumbing has also expressed interest to put up a call center that will offer thousands of jobs.
The opening of two new private hospitals in the reclamation area will also provide job opportunities.
Cortes said the City tax incentives board has crafted new tax incentives to attract more investors. He said Mandaue is an ideal business location because it is near the airport and the seaport.
“Mandaue is the heart of Cebu,” he added.
The City has partnered with the Institute for Solidarity in Asia to achieve its vision of becoming the premier business destination in the central Philippines.
