DOTC to hold trials on BRT for Cebu-A A +A
Saturday, September 28, 2013
THE Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) will conduct trials in Metro Manila to determine the feasibility of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) sytem proposed in Cebu City.
The trials are meant to obtain the “proof of concept” that the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) board, chaired by President Benigno Aquino III, required of the BRT Cebu project.
The Neda board deferred approval of the BRT project in November 2012 pending the absence of a proof of concept.
“It is expected that the DOTC will resubmit the Cebu City BRT proposal to the Neda board around the fourth quarter of 2013,” read a status report prepared by Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) Executive Director Rafael Yap.
City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete furnished the City Council a copy of the report, in compliance with a resolution seeking
updates on the BRT project.
As this developed, City Mayor Michael Rama told Yap ask Councilor Nestor Archival to become part of the technical working group for the BRT project.
Archival was the BRT consultant in 2010 but his contract was not renewed when Rama began his second term last July 1.
Archival is also the chairperson of the committee on energy, transportation, communication and utilities in the City Council.
