A PUBLIC school teacher died and his daughter got injured after they were ambushed by two motorcycle-riding assailants in Barangay Camboang, Dumanjug, Cebu before Sunday midnight.
Ariel Antonio Cosenas, 45, died from multiple gunshot wounds in his head, leg and stomach.
His 12-year-old daughter, whose name is being withheld for her security, sustained bruises on her body after the motorcycle Cosenas was driving fell on the road.
Senior Insp. Cesar Misola, the town’s police chief, said the father and daughter were heading home in Barangay Lawaan after attending the Teachers’ Night, one of the activities for the upcoming fiesta, when they were ambushed at 11:54 p.m.
The suspects, who had covered their faces, tailed the victims when they arrived near a farm in Sitio Lumboy.
According to Cosenas’ daughter, the suspects looked at them, as if to verify that it was the teacher who was driving the motorcycle, before shooting him in the head.
When Cosenas’ motorcycle fell, the passenger from the other bike alighted from their vehicle and shot Cosenas in the leg and stomach.
“Talagang sinigurado nila na mapatay siya. Malaki talaga siguro ang galit sa biktima (He made sure Cosenas would die. He must have been very angry with the victim),” Misola told Sun.Star Cebu.
The attackers then fled.
Some residents who were awakened by the gunfire immediately called the police, but Cosenas was dead by the time the authorities arrived.
An empty shell from a .45 pistol was recovered in the crime scene.
Misola, in an interview, revealed the teacher was a police asset and had helped in their campaign against illegal drugs.
Police investigators are also looking into other possible motives.
PO3 Dionesio Tagupa, one of the police investigators, said Cosenas complained against his neighbor last Sept. 18, after he got hurt.
The neighbor, who was drunk at that time, accidentally hit the public school teacher with a wire, which prompted the latter to report to the police.
This resulted in the arrest of Cosenas’ neighbor, but the latter was released after the teacher didn’t press charges against him.
PO3 Tagupa, in a separate interview, revealed Cosenas had broken up with his wife and
was temporarily in another relationship.
“Nibalik ra sad siya sa iyang asawa. Basin naa’y nasuko ani (Perhaps someone got angry when he went back to his wife),” he said.
The police are still verifying whether the teacher’s work in the Lawaan Elementary School could be related to the attack that ended his life.
