2 arrested in Kamagayan for selling Nubain-A A +A

THE alleged “Nubain queen” in Cebu City and her companions were arrested in a buy-bust in Barangay Kamagayan late Sunday night.
Seized from Jovita Rodriguez, 48, and Alejandro Rodriguez, 51, were 29 ampules of Nubain worth P6,000 in street sales.
The operation came after the Cebu City Health Department sought the help of police over the rise of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases this year.
Senior Insp. Eunil Avergonzado, head of City Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group (Caidsotg), said health officials are concerned about the increase in the number of drug users.
“They reuse the syringes and the number of HIV-positive cases has doubled,” he told Sun.Star Cebu.
A police decoy bought an ampule of Nubain from Jovita.
The police team rushed to Jovita’s house after receiving the signal from the decoy that the transaction had been consummated.
Police found vacant rooms that are allegedly used for drug sessions.
Avergonzado said the suspects admitted to selling shabu because they don’t have regular jobs.
He said they also found out that Jovita’s father used to sell Nubain in the area and passed the business on to his daughter.
“This has been their business for a long time,” Avergonzado said.
With the arrest of Jovita, the selling of Nubain in Kamagayan, a known red-light district, will slow down, Avergonzado said.
A report from City Health Department said there are 168 new cases of HIV and one person with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom (Aids) in Cebu City this year compared to last year’s 183 HIV cases and five persons with Aids.
Health officials advised the public not to engage in unsafe sexual practices.
