A ROBBERY suspect was killed during a shootout with police in Barangay Guinacot, Danao City, Cebu on Saturday morning.
Bobby Godinez, 36, and his alleged accomplice Guillercito Capute, 26, were indentified after they were caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera robbing La Carmona Mini Mart in Compostela last Tuesday.
They allegedly took P11,000 in cash.
Supt. Rodolfo Albotra, head of the Provincial Intelligence Branch of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO), said Godinez had been arrested before for a murder case, while Capute was allegedly involved in other robbery incidents in the province.
The operatives led by SPO1 Francis Alen Villamor first raided the house of Capute, who didn’t resist arrest. Seized from his possession were a .45 pistol with five live bullets and a fragmentation grenade.
They then proceeded to the rented house of Godinez. However, the suspect allegedly opened fire at police when they asked him to surrender.
Police shot Godinez in the knee to neutralize him. A scuffle erupted between the suspect and operatives when they tried to subdue him.
Godinez, who was armed with a .45 pistol, fired another shot, but missed.
“They were forced to shoot him again as he couldn’t be controlled anymore,” Albotra said. The suspect was shot in the body.
Godinez, a native of Lapu-Lapu City, died on the way to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City.
Albotra said Capute warned them that Godinez was armed.
“Dili kuno siya magpadakop og buhi (Godinez reportedly vowed not to be caught alive),” he said, adding that Godinez was high on illegal drugs during the shootout.
Police recovered the firearm Godinez allegedly used along with four bullets, a magazine with six live bullets and two cellular phones.
They also seized the clothes the suspects wore during the robbery.
Albotra told Sun.Star Cebu they had been monitoring the suspects since the robbery.
The footage from the CCTV camera installed inside the establishment led them to identify the robbers.
They conducted a background check and found out Godinez had a criminal record and Capute was accused of being involved in a string of robberies.
During a tactical interview, Capute said he only got P2,500 when they robbed the mini mart.
Godinez and Capute were also reportedly planning to conduct a robbery in Cebu City.
The police official said Capute had worked with other robbery suspects, one of whom was killed in a shootout with police in May last year.
Capute was detained in Consolacion Police Station, where complaints of robbery and illegal possession of firearms will be filed against him tomorrow.
He will also be charged with violating the election gun ban.
Under a Comelec resolution, penalties include imprisonment of one to six years, permanent disqualification from public office and not being allowed to vote.
