Report well drillings: MWCD to public-A A +A

A METROPOLITAN Cebu Water District (MCWD) official urged the public to report well drillings to the utility firm.
Charmaine Rodriguez, MCWD public affairs department manager, said the firm and the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) signed an agreement last April to temporarily stop the granting of permits for well drillings.
Rodriguez, in a news conference at Mandaue City Hall, said the moratorium is aimed at ensuring safe water consumption.
She said that while the MCWD strictly monitors its extraction of water from its wells, other private water suppliers and establishments that have their own wells may be over-extracting water.
“Too many deep wells will deplete our water resources. Over-extraction also affects the quality of water,” Rodriguez said.
Over-extraction, she said, may lead to unsafe water because of the presence of wastewater in the ground.
The moratorium does not cover artesian wells.
In 2011, the MCWD, NWRB and the Mandaue City Government signed a tripartite agreement to monitor and make an inventory of deep wells in the city.
Rodriguez said only 43 percent of the population in Metro Cebu gets water from MCWD.
The rest gets water from other suppliers, some of whom may be operating deep wells without permit.
The last well drilling that was granted a permit by NWRB was the one in Barangay Tingub, Mandaue City, Rodriguez said.
The Abejo Waters Corp. (AWC) undertook the drilling to supply more water to four Barangays in Mandaue.
Last Wednesday, the MCWD and the AWC signed a 10-year contract to supply more water to about 4,000 households in Barangays Cabancalan, Maguikay, Bakilid and Casuntingan.
Under the contract, the AWC will supply a minimum of 5,000 cubic meters per day at P14.78 per cubic meter.
The water will be injected to MCWD’s distribution line in Cabancalan.
The AWC is expected to deliver the water within a year.
MCWD is supplying around 5,000 cubic meters of water every day to the four barangays, but the volume is not enough.
