A TRAFFIC accident turned violent when an unidentified motorist shot and killed a soft drinks distributor in Barangay Ilihan in Toledo City, Cebu Saturday night.
Chief Insp. Michael Anthony Bastes, the city’s police chief, said the shooting happened at 6:45 p.m., when Joel Bonghanoy, 32, confronted the suspect.
Bonghanoy, a native of Vallehermoso, Negros Oriental, died from a gunshot wound in his left breast.
His companion Dionesio Traya, 28, of Barangay Bulongan, Toledo City was injured after was shot in the left shoulder.
Bastes said the suspect, who was driving an Isuzu Forward truck, reportedly hit the left side mirror of Bonghanoy’s Isuzu Elf truck.
Both trucks were heading toward Barangay Magdugo at that time of the incident.
The victims’ truck with plate number YKR 987 came from Barangay Poblacion, where they delivered soft drinks.
After hitting the delivery truck, the suspect allegedly didn’t pull over and sped off instead, prompting the victims to go after him. The victims were able to overtake the other truck and flagged down the driver.
Bonghanoy, Traya and two other men alighted from their truck to confront the suspect. However, the suspect pulled out a firearm and opened fire at the victims.
The suspect then fled toward Barangay Don Andres Soriano while the victims were rushed to the city hospital.
Bonghanoy was declared dead by Dr. Arlene Perez upon arrival at the hospital while Traya was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
In a phone interview, Bastes said they will check with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 today and try to find out who owns the truck driven by the suspect. The victims were able to take note of the plate number.
He said the suspect may not have wanted to shoot the victims, but did so after he was cornered.
“Wala man gyud naguba ang side mirror. Napiko lang,” Bastes said.
The police chief urged the suspect to surrender to authorities since they will be able to identify the truck’s owner eventually anyway, he said.
