THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) suspended the Oct. 28 barangay elections in Bohol after the province was devastated by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake last Oct. 15.
The suspension was decided unanimously in an en banc session, said Comelec Chairperson Sixto Brillantes who went to Bohol over the weekend to inspect affected areas.
The earthquake killed 186 persons in Bohol and destroyed hundreds of millions worth of property and infrastructure.
“We are coming out with a resolution. We will postpone it therefore so there will be no issue anymore,” Brillantes said.
Campaign period affected
He said a special election will be held in Bohol within the month. However, they have not picked a date yet, as they are still assessing the situation in several affected areas. This will also affect the campaign period in the province, he said.
“Wala nang mangangampanya, ‘yun ang mangyayari (What will happen is no one will campaign). We will also release the schedule of calendar of activities in the province, which includes the rescheduled date of the elections and the campaign period which is a week before,” Brillantes said.
Comelec also decided to shelve the barangay elections in Zamboanga following three weeks of hostilities between government forces and armed followers of Moro Islamic Liberation Front chairman Nur Misuari.
Elections in other parts of the country will proceed on Oct. 28. ((JCC of Sunnex)
