A FIRE broke out inside a taxi garage in Sitio Caimito, Barangay Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City late yesterday afternoon that destroyed a house and damaged three vehicles.
No one got injured as the caretaker and her family were out when the fire happened at 4:35 p.m.
SFO4 Jovito Abelgas of the Cebu City Fire Station said they managed to control the blaze after 10 minutes of firefighting. He pegged the damage to property at P150,000.
According to the initial investigation, the fire started in the back portion of the house occupied by the family of Theresa Añosa, 35.
Añosa, who was employed to look after the garage, went to the Basilica del Sto. Niño with her daughter at that time.
Some residents said they saw smoke coming out from the garage and was followed by flames, prompting them to call for help.
Before firefighters arrived, Ching Undag told Sun.Star Cebu one of her neighbors had to climb the garage and opened its gate.
“Nagtinabangay mi og bubo og tubig para mapawong (We helped each other to douse the fire with water),” said Undag, who lives across the street.
However, the fire was able to damage two taxicabs and a motorcycle owned by businesswoman Fe Go.
Añosa, when interviewed by Sun.Star Cebu, said she has no idea what caused the fire.
When she went outside the house, Añosa said she ensured that their electrical appliances were unplugged. She had been working as a garage caretaker since 2006.
“Na shock nalang ko nga nagkagubot na ang mga tawo pag-abot namo (I was surprised when we arrived to see the people in panic),” she said.
Taxi driver Vernie Dulla rushed to Sitio Caimito when he learned of the incident.
When he checked the garage, the taxi unit that he had been driving for a long time was one of those that got damaged.
The owner, in a separate interview, said she owned 14 taxi units. Each taxi reportedly cost less than a million.
The fire department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
