A YOUNG boy was killed after a dump truck carrying anapog or limestone ran over him over in Barangay Balud, San Fernando yesterday morning.
Larry Bedolido, 13, was killed instantly. Eight pigs were also killed after the truck, whose brakes malfunctioned, hit a pig pen.
The truck’s driver, Melvin Largo, surrendered to the police after the incident.
He claimed that he lost control of the truck’s brakes.
Rene Bonghanoy, 14, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday that he and Bedolido were playing basketball outside the house of Doroteo Yuko when he noticed Largo’s truck speeding toward their direction.
Bonghanoy said he attempted to save Bedolido by pulling him away from the truck’s path but it was too late.
“Ako unta siya ibira pero ang ako nakaptan kay bola ra (I tried to pull him away but the only thing that I was able to grab was the ball),” he added.
The speeding truck did not only run over Bedolido but also eight piglets that Yuko bought recently.
SPO1 Leoben Sebomit, the case investigator, said the driver was immediately brought to the Carcar District Hospital after he sustained minor injury on his face and body.
He said that based on their initial investigation, Largo and his truck boy were going toward Barangay South Poblacion to deliver anapog or crushed limestone to a cement company there.
But when they arrived in Sitio Arce, Largo reportedly lost control of the brakes while maneuvering a downhill path.
Sebomit said that Largo directed his vehicle toward Yuko’s property in an attempt to control it, but he didn’t realize that Bedolido was in the way.
Residents in the area said it was not the first time that an accident occurred there.
After being treated in the hospital, Largo will be detained at the San Fernando Police Station and will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and damage to property.
