AN UNIDENTIFIED man shot and killed a 50-year-old real estate broker and wounded his uncle yesterday morning in front of a bank in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.

The incident took place two days after the victim Edgar Cañete received death threats through text messages, said SPO4 Alex Dacua, homicide investigator.

Cañete was declared dead on arrival at the Gullas Hospital, while his uncle, 63-year-old Rudy Capito, is still confined at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Center (VSMMC).

Cañete sustained multiple gunshot wounds while Capito had an injured left foot.

The shooting incident took place a few seconds after Cañete, his live-in partner Sheila Bagiuo and Capito have just withdrew more than P500,000 from the bank along A.S. Fortuna, Barangay Banilad, Cebu City past 10 a.m.

The money was recovered in the victim’s possession.

The gunman reportedly waited for him outside the bank. The culprit then approached the victim and asked if he was Edgar. The victim replied positively.

Then the assailant reportedly pulled out a gun and shot him.

Cañete was able to push the handgun away, hitting Capito’s left foot.

The gunman then aimed his gun back at Cañete and shot him several times.

The suspect returned back to the getaway motorcycle driven by his companion and fled toward Cebu City.

Dacua said that Edgar received threats on his life through text, saying, “Magbantay mo inigkuha sa kwarta sa RCBC (watch out when you get the money from RCBC).”

Dacua said as of the press time they have no idea yet on the motive of the killing. He said all angles are being looked into, including the victim’s profession as a real estate broker.

He did not discount the possibility of a personal grudge.

Cañete was a broker of a private cemetery located in Liloan. Personnel from Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) recovered at least seven empty shells from a .45 pistol.

A hot pursuit operation was immediately conducted after the incident but responding policemen returned to barracks handed-empty.
